The director of the Kherson Regional Art Museum named after O. Shovkunenko (Ms. Alina Dotsenko) informed the Ukrainian media that representatives of the Russian Federation occupation authorities are planning to move Kherson art collections to the Crimea or Russia. The collection gathered in the Art Museum is around 8 thousand exhibits. 18th and 19th century canvases by Russian and Ukrainian painters – such as I. Aivazovsky, A. Beggrov, Gevorg Bashinjaghian, A. Bogolyubov, I. Kramskoy, K. Kryzhitsky and R. Sudkovsky – are a key part of this treasure trove. “Fairy Tale” by a Ukrainian Art Nouveau artist, Mykhailo Zhuk, is the pearl of the collection, which also includes paintings by European painters of 17th and 18th centuries like Peter Lely, August von Bayer and Gustav Richter. The Museum also has a rich collection of decorative and applied arts from the East (China, Japan and other Asian countries) – including vases in crackle enamel and partition enamel techniques – as well as SACUM ceramics.
Next to the Art Museum there is the Kherson Regional Local Lore Museum with a collection of about 150 thousand exhibits. The institution has one of the most magnificent archaeological collections in Ukraine – including coins from ancient Greek cities in the Black Sea region, a range of weaponry from the 15th to the 20th centuries, antique furniture and porcelain, Sarmatian ornaments from the 2nd-1st centuries BC, and ancient vases from the Greek island of Chios.
