On 8 June, in the framework of the celebrations of the 60 years of service of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, special topic panels were held on the issues related to protection and preservation of cultural heritage. The situation in war-stricken Ukraine was one of the main discussed subjects. A starting point for the discussion in this regard was provided by the “Warsaw Recommendation on Recovery and Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage” . This document was penned in 2018 based, among other things, on the Polish experience of rebuilding the country affected by war damage – the scale of losses suffered by Warsaw or Gdańsk is comparable to that in the ruined Mariupol or Kharkiv.
In the course of the first panel, speakers presented the principles of the Warsaw Recommendation stressing, among others, the importance of local communities in any restoration plans. They also discussed the protection of intangible heritage and the results of the latest report “Special Report on the Intangible Heritage of Relocated Ukrainian Communities in Poland”. A separate presentation dealt with the variety of techniques of digital documentation of monuments.
The second panel focused on climate change and its impact on cultural heritage and on the ways in which new technologies can be used in the revitalisation process without losing historic value of the monument.
