Precious archival materials are among the cultural properties which have suffered at the time of the war in Ukraine – the total number of archival materials of the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine recorded on various carriers amounts to 82.7M. The State Archives of the L’viv Region (Oblast) is the largest of the state archives in western Ukraine. Its collection of almost 3 million records contains important materials related to Polish history.
- A debt letter on birch bark from the 12th century, originating from the ancient Ruthenian town of Zvenyhorod is the oldest document stored at the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in L’viv.
- The oldest document kept in the State Archives of the Kyiv Region (Oblast) is a Greek evangeliary (parchment, 13th century – Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kyiv).
- The oldest relic of the State Archives dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. (clay tablets – in the Collection of the Manuscript Institute of the V.I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in Kyiv).
- The oldest document of the State Archives of Slavic origins – the Kyiv Missal (or Kyiv Fragments or Kyiv Folios) – late 9th c. – early 10th c. – in the Collection of the Manuscript Institute of the V.I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in Kyiv.
Several archives have already been destroyed in Ukraine since the beginning of the war. In the Archival Department of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Chernihiv region, 12 thousand records concerning Stalinist repressions against Ukrainian citizens have been torched. The buildings of the State Archives of Kharkiv Region and State Archives of Mykolayiv Region (Oblast) have been damaged. In Bucha near Kyiv, the private archive of Vyacheslav Chornovil has been destroyed.
